I originally described lexical gravity as a weighted word field. That is true, but incomplete. A word field can change the surface of a sentence. An interpretive lens changes what the sentence believes is happening — and once something moves inside that logic, the scene owes the reader something afterward.
While building the first case study, I realized vocabulary alone is not the real engine. A list of photography words can give us focus, frame, exposure, grain. That may make a sentence sound more photographic. It does not necessarily make the scene think photographically.
Photography is powerful not because it contains the word focus, but because focusing foregrounds one thing and excludes another. Framing is an act of selection. Exposure reveals something — and may make that knowledge dangerous. Cropping makes an absence meaningful. Development turns a latent trace into something legible. Fixing makes a fleeting thing durable.
Those are not decorative associations. They are consequences.
The order matters. Words come last.
The deeper version of lexical gravity asks: what does this field make visible? What does it push into the background? What relationships does it organize? What kinds of change does it make meaningful? And once something changes, what does the scene now owe the reader? I'm calling that underlying system lens logic.
What becomes focal, backgrounded, absent, distorted, or unusually visible. What is in focus? What falls outside the frame?
The meaningful oppositions that organize the domain. sharp / blurred · exposed / hidden · focal / peripheral · latent / developed · included / cropped out
The positions scene elements can occupy. observer · subject · background · frame · excluded element · latent image
The changes that can occur between those positions. focus · crop · expose · develop · capture · fix

"Use photography words in this hallway scene."
"Understand this hallway scene as an arrangement of attention, framing, exclusion, and partial revelation. Then choose language that makes that understanding legible."
Before choosing words, the model maps scene elements onto lens positions. The hallway from part I again — but now the prose is not borrowing a photographic atmosphere. It is understanding the scene as a relationship between observer, subject, background, and unreadable evidence.
This is the bridge the word field was missing. Readers do not build their understanding of a story from word choice alone — narrative-comprehension research describes readers forming situation models: representations of characters, goals, time, space, causality, and events, not merely the surface wording of a sentence.
A word field affects the textual surface. A lens becomes narratively useful when it changes, sharpens, or complicates the reader's model of what is happening.
appeared → came into focus · cluster → blur · could see → caught — useful substitutions. But lens logic asks a prior question: what occupies the positions in this photographic arrangement?
A charged moment performs one lens-native transition that matters to a character. I've started thinking of it as a capacitor: the lens establishes the poles, semantic positioning places scene elements at different potentials, a meaningful transition creates the voltage — and deferring the response stores it. The reader feels that the scene has stored energy.
Something can no longer be ignored.
Someone knows something they must eventually act upon.
An absence has become conspicuous.
A possibility has narrowed.
A relationship has become asymmetrical.
A choice has become less reversible.
Tension research backs the distinction: uncertainty alone is insufficient — the possible consequence must matter to someone.
Ava came into focus at the end of the hallway, the freshmen going grainy around her. Nate caught the furrow between her brows. Then she looked up. Her eyes passed over him and fixed on the door behind his shoulder.
The charge isn't in focus, grainy, or fixed. It's in the semantic reversal: Nate makes Ava focal. Ava makes Nate peripheral. He believes he is observing her; she reveals her attention is somewhere else. Their attention is asymmetrical — and that asymmetry is now part of the reader's situation model.
It may become romance, embarrassment, a threat at the door — or a brief, accurate correction to Nate's assumptions. The story doesn't owe us one particular outcome. But it owes us the recognition that something happened. That's the little capacitor starting to hum on the page.
Only now does the model reach into the word field — noun fields, verb fields, gradients, metaphoric associations, cliché warnings, saturation, reach. The original mechanics of lexical gravity still matter; they become the realization layer, not the whole system. The tool is no longer saying "find a photography-flavored synonym for see." It's saying: "Realize that movement in language that belongs naturally to the lens, without announcing it so loudly it breaks the scene." That is a much better problem.
If we remove every obvious lens word, does the altered attention, relationship, or expectation remain?
If not, the lens is wearing a costume.
A lens does not change only the words. It changes the question the reader carries forward. If a model treats photography, painting, and music as interchangeable aesthetic coatings, you get vocabulary soup. If it understands their internal logic, each one changes what the scene is allowed to mean.
What is being noticed — and what gets excluded?
Ava came into focus at the end of the hallway, the freshmen going grainy around her. Nate caught the furrow between her brows. Then she looked up, past him, at the door behind his shoulder.
What is Nate missing? What is at — or beyond — that door?
Failure mode: a character who carries a camera around in their soul. "Everything came into focus" every third sentence is a fog machine with a zoom lens.
How are elements composed into a whole — and what has been painted over?
Ava stood at the far end of the hallway, her portfolio case cutting a dark diagonal across the bright wash of students. The furrow between her brows was a small bad stroke in an otherwise composed face.
What arrangement is she maintaining, and what flaw is beginning to show through?
Failure mode: static prettiness — describing a tableau forever while nothing changes. The composition must be altered, revealed as artificial, or made unstable.
What is happening across time — and when will it resolve?
Ava moved through the hallway a half-beat out of time with everyone else. Nate waited for her usual joke, but she left the space where it belonged empty.
What familiar pattern has broken, and what will take its place?
Failure mode: metaphorical scorekeeping — every person a melody, every silence a rest. The strongest use is one structural move: a withheld refrain, a cadence denied.
Same plot fact. Three lenses. Three distinct reader expectations. The lens doesn't merely decorate the sentence — it selects which kind of consequence the prose stores. The charged moment stores energy; the scene incurs a debt the reader expects the story to acknowledge later. Not necessarily resolve immediately. But acknowledge.
How strongly or frequently the lens influences the prose — from a barely-noticed way of looking to a deliberately stylized narrator.
How far the prose may travel into specialist vocabulary — focus and blur at low reach; contact sheet, fixer, silver halide at high reach, only where character and genre can bear them.
A structural effect on the scene — not another name for high weight. A sentence can be lexically saturated and narratively inert; a nearly invisible reframe can carry enormous charge.
One quiet shift in who gets to be central in the frame can store more energy than six paragraphs yelling aperture.
POS buckets, gradients, substitutions, clichés. The model improvises the actual interpretive reasoning — sometimes beautifully, but the contract doesn't require it.
With inferential structure, blending gets interesting: Photography 70% / Music 30% can mean photography supplies the governing attention logic while music supplies a subordinate rhythm of suspension — not exquisitely calibrated vocabulary soup. And nobody needs that on a Tuesday.

These support neighboring parts of the argument; none should be read as proof that lexical gravity, specifically, works as a finished product.
Grounding for the claim that a source domain contains meaningful relations, not merely a vocabulary list.
Closest to the lens-logic turn: conceptual mappings between domains guide meaningful metaphor generation.
A useful caveat: LLM handling of metaphorical inference is testable — not something to assume blindly.
The strongest technical cousin to the gravity metaphor: shifting generation toward words semantically related to a guide word.
Semantic representations and composable controls can steer generation beyond keyword insertion.
Best support for the capacitor: tension = instability directing attention toward emotionally significant future events.
Readers track narrative information by causal relevance — why "what becomes consequential?" beats "what sounds unusual?"
A warning for richer lenses: multiple controls can interfere or harm fluency when simply combined. Structure and restraint, not more instructions piled on.
The goal is to give a model more than one blandly probable way to understand a moment before it starts choosing words. A hallway can remain a hallway. But perhaps the reader feels the scene has made a small promise — and the story will have to decide whether to keep it.
